What Should I Expect When I Walk Through the Door?
You will probably be disappointed by how normal it is.
Nobody stands up and points at you. Nobody asks you to tell your life story. Nobody asks you to prove you belong there.
You walk in. You find a seat. The meeting starts. Most Dumaguete AA meetings are small meetings around a table or group of tables, not large rooms with rows of chairs.
The hardest part of a first AA meeting is usually not the meeting. It is getting yourself through the door.

Meeting schedules can change. Before you go, check the current Dumaguete AA meetings page.
Who This Page Is For
- Someone thinking about going to a first AA meeting in Dumaguete.
- Someone who wants to know what the room actually looks like before walking in.
- Someone who is nervous about being noticed, questioned, or expected to speak.
- Someone who already knows something is wrong with their drinking but is not sure what happens next.
If You Are Asking This Question
If you are asking what happens when you walk through the door, you may already know something is wrong.
You may not be ready to call yourself alcoholic. You may not be ready to stop drinking forever. You may only be tired of making promises, hiding the problem, waking up anxious, or trying to manage drinking with new rules.
That is enough reason to try a meeting.
The first goal is simple: spend a little time in a place where nobody is drinking.
What You Will See at Bethel Guest House
Bethel Guest House is downtown on Rizal Boulevard.
The ground floor has an entrance from the boulevard. Walk up the steps and Cafe Filomena is on your right. Cafe Filomena is a good place to get pancakes and coffee before the meeting.
The lobby has an elevator and stairs in the corner. Take the elevator to the 5th floor. You can also take the stairs.
The elevator opens onto the 5th floor common area. Between the common area and the balcony is a large glass door. The wall facing the balcony area is glass.
Walk through the glass door and you are on the 5th floor balcony facing the boulevard and the sea. The meeting is on the balcony.
The balcony is covered, breezy, and has plastic chairs. You can smoke on the balcony. You can bring coffee or water from Cafe Filomena to the balcony.
You find a seat at the table or near the table. People may be talking before the meeting starts. That is normal.
What You Will See at Valencia
The Valencia meeting is at a ground-floor restaurant with a large metal rolling door. The entrance is open to the parking area and the street.
You can see the meeting area before entering the room. It is bright, family-friendly, and simple: basic chairs, tables, and a tile floor.
If you go early, you can get breakfast or coffee. You will see members begin to come in and take seats around the table.
This meeting has a walk-in-off-the-street feeling. You enter, find a seat, and the meeting starts.
What You Will See at Dauin
The Dauin meeting is literally on the beach.
The beach is shaded and slopes gently into calm water. You will see a group around a plastic table, sitting in plastic chairs on the sand under the shade.
You can smoke on the beach. You can plan to swim afterward. If you want to eat, you may need to order or bring barbecue.
This is one of the more relaxed meeting settings you are likely to find. It is still an AA meeting. It just happens to be on the beach.
What People Are Doing When You Arrive
People are usually doing ordinary things.
- Talking before the meeting starts.
- Getting coffee or water.
- Moving chairs.
- Sitting around the table.
- Saying hello to people they know.
- Waiting for the meeting to begin.
Most people are not studying you. Most people are thinking about their own day, their own recovery, or whether the meeting is about to start.
If someone says hello, you can say hello. If nobody says much at first, sit down anyway.
What If You Are Early?
Good. Being early gives you time to find the place, see the room, and settle yourself before the meeting starts.
At Bethel, you can get coffee at Cafe Filomena and then go up to the 5th floor balcony. At Valencia, you can get breakfast or coffee. At Dauin, you can enjoy the beach setting before people settle around the table.
If you are early and nervous, that is normal. Stay close. Wait. Let the room become ordinary.
What If You Are Late?
Walk in quietly and find a seat.
That is all. People arrive late sometimes. It happens.
You do not need to announce why you are late. You do not need to apologize to the room. Just sit down and listen.
What If You Do Not Know Anyone?
You probably will not know anyone at your first meeting.
That is normal. Everyone in the room had a first meeting. Everyone in the room once walked into AA without knowing exactly what would happen.
You can bring someone with you if the meeting is open and that helps you get through the door.

What If You Do Not Know What to Say?
Then do not say anything.
You can listen. Many people attend their first meeting and say little or nothing.
You do not have to tell your story. You do not have to explain your drinking. You do not have to decide what you are before the meeting begins.

What If You Want to Leave?
You can leave.
Nobody will stop you. Nobody will follow you. Nobody needs an explanation.
At Bethel, get up quietly, walk through the glass door, go to the elevator or stairs, and leave through the lobby.
At Valencia, get up quietly, walk toward the large open exit, and you are immediately outside on the parking area and street.
At Dauin, get up quietly and walk along the beach, or go back toward the parking area behind the cottages.
Leaving once does not mean AA is not for you. You can try another meeting. You can come back another day.

What If You Do Not Like the First Meeting?
Try another meeting.
Maybe you did not like the Tuesday crowd. Maybe you would like the Friday crowd better. Maybe Bethel is too downtown for you. Maybe Valencia feels easier. Maybe the beach meeting in Dauin gives you the breathing room you need.
One meeting is not the whole of AA. If you think you are ready for help, try another room before deciding AA is not for you.
The Main Thing
The main thing is go to a meeting.
Bring someone if you want.
Go to Dauin if you want the beach and a swim break afterward. Go to Valencia if you want the walk-in-off-the-street feeling, breakfast, and coffee. Go to Bethel if you want downtown convenience on the boulevard and the 5th floor balcony facing the sea.
Just go.
Find the door. Open the door. Take a seat. Listen.
After that, you are just another person sitting at a table.
