Do You Have to Speak at Your First AA Meeting in Dumaguete?
No.
You do not have to speak at your first meeting.
You do not need a speech.
You do not need to tell your story.
You do not need to explain why you came.
You can walk in, sit down, and listen.
That is enough.

For Many People, This Is The Biggest Fear
Many people are not afraid of the meeting.
They are afraid of being asked to speak.
They worry they will not know what to say.
They worry people will look at them.
They worry they will be expected to tell their whole story.
They worry they will say the wrong thing.
Many people spend more time worrying about the meeting than they spend in the meeting itself.
What Actually Happens
The reality is usually much simpler than people imagine.
You arrive.
You find a seat at the table.
The meeting begins.
People read. People listen. People share.
The room is usually far less intimidating than it seemed before you walked through the door.
What If The Chair Asks About First Timers?
Near the beginning of the meeting, the chair may ask if anyone is visiting from another group, attending for the first time, or celebrating a sobriety anniversary, often called a birthday.
This is not directed at any one person.
It is simply a chance for people to identify themselves if they want to.
You can raise your hand and say it is your first meeting.
You can say you are just here to listen.
You do not have to do either.
What If I Do Not Know What To Say?
You are not expected to know what to say.
You are not expected to arrive prepared.
You are not expected to have the right words.
If you choose to speak, a simple introduction is enough.
If you choose not to speak, that is fine too.
What If I Get Emotional?
Then you get emotional.
You would not be the first person.
Many people arrive carrying more than they have been able to talk about anywhere else.
No one expects perfection.
What If I Just Listen?
Many people do.
Some people listen through their entire first meeting.
Some people listen through several meetings.
Listening is not unusual.
Listening is enough.
Everyone In The Room Was New Once
Everyone who attends today had a first meeting.
Everyone walked through the door without knowing exactly what would happen.
Everyone sat down for the first time.
Everyone listened to people they had never met before.
You are not the first person to feel nervous before a meeting.
The Short Version
You do not have to speak.
You do not need a speech.
You do not need a story prepared.
You can walk in, sit down, and listen.
For a first meeting, that is enough.
